Traveling through transition: from surviving to thriving

Library development depends on rapid changes in the environment, such as pressure on budgets, personnel and space, and much higher expectations of users. Libraries, therefore, have to focus on virtual space where users’ eyes are. They should link up with popular network services, such as Google and other similar service providers, and keep in mind that users’ expectations as regards catalogues do not match theirs. The context of cataloguing has greatly changed as libraries are no longer the sole providers of information resources (metadata). A new approach to managing the creation of metadata must be developed, which is the priority task of the library profession. Linking COBISS and WorldCat is a step in the right direction in providing users with an overview of information sources not only globally but also regionally and locally.
