IPv6 – ali ga že potrebujemo?

The Internet is the driving force of the modern world. The fundamental technology for its operation is Internet protocol. Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4) was developed forty years ago and not enough address space was planned for today’s demands. Consequently, mechanisms were already starting to form to extend the IPv4 address space and develop the new version 6 (IPv6) in the past millennium. IPv6 primarily solves the main weakness of IPv4 because the number of IPv6 addresses is incomprehensibly large. As it turns out, IPv6 will represent the Internet of the future and will gradually, probably within a few decades, replace IPv4. In the meantime, they will co-exist in communication networks. We can be proud that thanks to some experts and enthusiasts, IPv6 has already been implemented in many large business networks in Slovenia. IZUM also already offers its services via IPv6 and, as a result, has joined the ranks of those who were among the first to offer their services via IPv6. The results are encouraging, but the work is not finished yet.
