After the opening of its new building in 1926, the University Library received many gifts; the first among them was a special collection of Petar Budmani. Today, the University Library holds 26 important special collections.

The network of university libraries in Serbia is becoming increasingly more complex. At the moment, Serbia has seven state universities and just as many private universities. Private universities are as real as the many changes likely to happen in state universities.
