The basis for the analysis of scientific and similar monographs (academic books) in Slovenia in the period from 2013 to 2023 were bibliographic records in the COBIB.SI database that contain also information on the type of scientific publication (for less than half of the records verified). During this period, an average of 520 to 1245 monographs were published annually (depending on which types of works are counted as academic books and how reissues, such as reprints, new editions and e-books, are treated). The number was declining, especially after 2019; it has fallen by around 6.5% per year. The locations of publications were linked to university centres; almost three quarters of monographs were published in Ljubljana. The total number of Slovenian publishers that publish academic books as defined in the sample amounted to almost 1,500, of which 20 publishers produced more than 50% of all monographs. One out of five academic books was published by the University of Ljubljana. Around 63–70% of academic books were in the social sciences and humanities. A similar proportion of publications were written in Slovenian, which was convincingly the first language of Slovenian academic books (71.5%). Just over 40% of academic books were published electronically, and the vast majority (over 80%) of them are freely accessible.
