After the opening of its new building in 1926, the University Library received many gifts; the ﬁrst among them was a special collection of Petar Budmani. Today, the University Library holds 26 important special collections.

At the scientific conference Libraries in the 21st century the vision of the library of the third millennium was accepted. In the centre of its future role stands a fully-educated librarian. In Serbia specialized library education started in 1948. In 1963 education of librarians started also at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade.
