The usage of XML technology is a common feature of many present-day WWW applications. The article presents certain new aspects in the development of XML technology. More and more XML standards have begun to emerge and have been made implemented. The majority of most important XML specifications has already been standardised.

According to their purpose user studies belong to the information science, according to their methods (questionnaire, interview, focus group) they belong to the named older social sciences.
The article addresses the issue of the cataloguing rules used in Slovenia within the COBISS shared cataloguing system. The outdated cataloguing codes (PPIAK, AIK), and undocumented updates, modifications, and cataloguing practice from the last 14 years have created in the time of high-speed technological changes more and more difficulties in the development and operation of the COBISS system.
