Dialectical reflections on scientific and professional e-journals

The paper presents the contributions of participants at the consultation on scientific and professional publications on e-journals at the beginning of the 1990s, which was organised at the Institute of Information Science (IZUM) in Maribor in December 1991. The emphasis is also placed on IZUM’s e-bulletin, which was entered into one of the first directories of e-journals and other e-bulletins worldwide from the same year. Communication is the essence of scientific progress, particularly e-journals.

Connection between information science and psychology based on the example of the paradox of wisdom, part 1

Wisdom is one of many human mental capabilities. Mental vitality is stereotypically associated with youth and mental decline with old age. However, also aging is a price of wisdom. Hoaxes, myths and prejudice in science: example of Pierre Trémaux

The literature review is an integral part of research. The story of Pierre Trémaux (1818–1895) illustrates how factors, such as hoaxes, fabrications, untrue stories, myths and prejudice, which have nothing to do in science, difficulties in comprehending and accepting new scientific paradigms and also slow and geographically limited dissemination of scientific findings, which results in not being familiar with scientific findings and discoveries elsewhere in the world, are harmful for the ecology of scientific communication.

Structural crisis of copyright, part 2

Moralne avtorske pravice nimajo tržne vrednosti in so s stališča družbenega sistema, v katerem šteje le denar, nepomembne. Stališče do avtorske pravice je odvisno tudi od poslovnega modela, kot sta npr. model “dolgega repa” ali model “zastonj”.

Structural crisis of copyright, part 1

Copyright is a type of intellectual property. Not only is the Slovene term “avtorska pravica” (author’s right) not the best translation of the term copyright (i.e. the right to copy an item), it is also misleading, as if the central person is the author and not the holder of the right to copy something. While the author is undoubtedly the holder of the moral copyright, he is rarely also the holder of the material rights. Moral copyright has no market value and is insignificant from the perspective of a social system where only money counts. The attitude towards copyright also depends on the business model, e.g. “long-tail” or “freechange”.

Od RBU do COBIB

Relating to the connection between information science and bibliography (and librarianship), the elements are given to compare the concepts of Répertoire Bibliographique Universel (RBU) and COBIB within the COBISS system. Different aspects of understanding the development of bibliographies and the author’s personal view of the development of bibliographies are presented. According to Paul Otlet’s idea, conceived at the end of the 19th century, RBU was to represent the universal bibliography of all books and other publications from all countries, from all times and from all subject areas, organised by subject and author. Catalogues should represent the first stage of RBU.

Socialna ekonomija sistema COBISS in mreže COBISS.Net

A historical view of the social economy of the COBISS system and of the COBISS.Net network is presented. Library economics is an important part of librarianship.
