The article presents my diploma thesis titled The Development and the Importance of the Library of the Association of Blind and Partially Sighted of Slovenia, which I defended at the Department for Librarianship at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. I would like to emphasize that, similar to other groups of library users with special needs, the blind and the partially sighted also expect certain additional attention and support from the library staff. Therefore I am giving some basic data on the needs and particularities of the blind and partially sighted users, and some information on the books adjusted for them and the reading techniques the blind and partially sighted apply. The Library of the Association of Blind and Partially Sighted of Slovenia is the central lending library for the blind and the partially sighted throughout Slovenia and has been operating for over eighty years now. It is quite different from traditional libraries, because it mainly holds and lends books in Braille writing and audio books on audio cassettes. Other activities such as loan, acquisition, communication with the users etc. also differ from the activities in traditional libraries.
