Dobreknjige.si is an online platform designed for readers seeking high-quality fiction and non-fiction recommendations. As a national project of Slovenian public libraries, it helps users organize their reading and connect with fellow readers, and promotes a vibrant reading culture. The portal attracts over two million visits annually, with its popularity steadily increasing. After a decade of operation, a major upgrade became necessary due to outdated technology, limited development possibilities and the need to meet modern user expectations. The revamped portal introduces advanced search features, including the Four Doors concept, Literary GPS and cover colour filtering, making book discovery more intuitive. Interactivity has been significantly enhanced, offering features such as reading journals, quizzes and a curated collection of literary quotes. Improved personalization allows users to follow books, authors, and genres. Additionally, the new platform prioritizes accessibility for users with special needs and fosters greater community involvement in content creation. With these updates, Dobreknjige.si remains Slovenia’s leading book recommendation portal, nurturing a dynamic reading culture and strengthening connections within the literary and library communities.

Monitoring user debts and debt recovery in public libraries: the case of the Kranj City Library

Kranj City Library is one of the largest Slovenian public libraries, which, like most Slovenian libraries, also deals with the debts of its users. Prohit Claims Management Agency helps us to collect the debts. Before collection by an external contractor, we first carry out a series of procedures in the library to collect the debts ourselves. We regularly monitor the debts of library users and inform them about their debts.

Foreign research reports low use of mobile devices for reading e-texts among students, so we investigated mobile reading behaviour among UL students. The amendments to the Librarianship Act in 2015 redefined the status of school libraries and assigned new tasks associated with the monitoring of the activities and development of school libraries to the National and University Library (NUL). The statistical monitoring of activities performed by school libraries, the designing of the school library development strategy, the concept of three-year development plans and the development of regulations on the conditions to be met by school libraries in the field of education are among the new activities of the Library System Development Centre, NUL.
